Each year in western Mongolia, one of the world’s most spectacular cultural events takes place: the Golden Eagle Festival, also known as the Eagle Hunters Festival. This ancient celebration honors the remarkable tradition of Kazakh eagle hunting — a practice that has been part of nomadic life in Central Asia for thousands of years.
In 2026, the festival will culminate with the World Championship of Eagle Hunters, where skilled berkutchi (eagle hunters) from Mongolia and beyond gather to showcase their incredible bond with their golden eagles. These majestic birds, revered for their strength, agility, and hunting prowess, are central to the event.

What to Expect

Traditional Competitions: Hunters and their eagles compete in tests of speed, precision, and teamwork — from recalling the eagle from a distance to grabbing simulated prey.
Cultural Shows: The festival features vibrant Kazakh music, dance, and ceremonies. Visitors can also enjoy traditional games such as kokpar (goat skin tug-of-war) and kiz kuar (horseback chase).
Visual Spectacle: Eagle hunters dressed in ornate traditional attire ride horseback across the stunning Altai Mountains, creating unforgettable photographic moments.
Heritage Celebration: Beyond competition, the festival is a living celebration of Kazakh nomadic culture — from handcrafted costumes and foods to the unique lifestyle surrounding eagle hunting.
